Commission Discusses Backup Generators for Sewage Systems

Updated: Sep 15
After listening to public comments suggesting backup generators were not required, and after questioning our Public Services Director, a clear majority of the commission voiced support for backup generators for critical neighborhood lift stations.
The proposed backup power ensures the operation of raw sewage pumps for entire neighborhoods during a power outage, hence providing protection to thousands of people.
The commission delayed the item because 3 of the 5 commissioners suggested the design did not meet community expectations for aesthetic appeal. Specifically, the Belle Vista and Pass-a-grille backup generators sit in prominent view along the neighborhood entrances. I have received negative feedback regarding the city design.
The District 4 commissioner stated he would not support a structure that diminished the historic character of Pass-a-grille, and suggested that a mural might provide an artistic, low cost fix.
In today’s discussion with the city manager, I held that an artistic element must be implemented to an acceptable level on a case by case basis. So, please send me your ideas ASAP. Otherwise, the staff will likely go ahead with a mural concept.
As for the location of the Belle Vista Backup Generator in Triangle Park, the current city plan is to install the generator on the east side of the park along the property line. While some owners of property adjacent to the park have voiced support for the plan, some have suggested the center of the park is better. Unless I receive more compelling community engagement, I plan to support the plan proposed by the city.
