Signs on the Beach

I discussed beach signage with our City Attorneys and City Manager this week, specifically how to reduce signs on the beach, if not eliminate non-governmental signage altogether.

One source of posts and signage we explored was the Designated Service Area established for alcohol service. We considered if the service area might be defined as a cabana itself rather than a zone enclosing the cabana. Hence, alcohol would be required to be served to an officially placed cabana. Our proposal would be to eliminate the “zone,” and modifying our ordinance to simply state the following: ,

“Alcohol must be served to a cabana located by licensee staff”

“Cabanas must remain at least 50 feet away from the visible water line at all times”

“Cabanas must be removed and stacked landward of the CCCL during turtle season.”

As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, zones currently designated by permanent posts pose a hazard when cabanas are removed.

We also discussed if we could eliminate signage on the beach except for governmental signage. Perhaps equipment rental signs could be prohibited seaward of the CCCL.
